The Physiology of the World Record Holder for the Women’s Marathon
نویسنده
چکیده
The purpose of this paper is to review the physiological determinants of endurance exercise performance by using the data of the World Record holder for the women’s marathon (PR), to illustrate the link between an athlete’s physiology and success in distance running. The maximal oxygen (O2) uptake, O2 cost of running at sub-maximal speeds (running economy), and blood lactate response to exercise can all be determined using standard physiology laboratory exercise tests and the results used to track changes in ‘fitness’ and to make recommendations for future training. PR’s data demonstrate a 15% improvement in running economy between 1992 and 2003 suggesting that improvements in this parameter are very important in allowing a distance runner to continue to improve their performance over the longer-term. PR’s data demonstrate how 15 years of directed training have created the ‘complete’ female distance runner and enabled the setting of an extraordinary World record of 2:15:25 for the

The 2-hour marathon: what do students think?
For over 100 yr, athletes, coaches, and scientists have endeavored to improve running performance. For example, former Olympian and academic physician, Sir Roger Bannister, broke the 4-min barrier in the mile, while at the same time publishing a series of experiments in the Journal of Physiology (2–5) investigating the limits to athletic performance. Bannister would later write (1) that “Athlet...
متن کاملSex differences in elite swimming with advanced age are less than marathon running.
The sex difference in marathon performance increases with finishing place and age of the runner but whether this occurs among swimmers is unknown. The purpose was to compare sex differences in swimming velocity across world record place (1st-10th), age group (25-89 years), and event distance. We also compared sex differences between freestyle swimming and marathon running. The world's top 10 sw...
متن کاملLast Word on Viewpoint: The two-hour marathon: What's the equivalent for women?
TO THE EDITOR: We thank our colleagues who commented (see Ref. 2) on the “The two-hour marathon: what’s the equivalent for women?” (5). In general the comments highlighted several important points. Exercise performance of women and the underlying physiological mechanisms deserves more attention. Noted by several commentaries (see Ref. 2), there is a dearth of data on the physiological limitatio...
متن کاملModeling: optimal marathon performance on the basis of physiological factors.
This paper examines current concepts concerning "limiting" factors in human endurance performance by modeling marathon running times on the basis of various combinations of previously reported values of maximal O2 uptake (VO2max), lactate threshold, and running economy in elite distance runners. The current concept is that VO2max sets the upper limit for aerobic metabolism while the blood lacta...
متن کاملCommentaries on Viewpoint: The two-hour marathon: what’s the equivalent for women? THE WOMEN’S PHYSIOLOGICAL EQUIVALENT OF A 2-H MARATHON
TO THE EDITOR: Hunter et al. (1) are to be congratulated for their insightful commentary regarding the equivalent of a 2-h marathon for women. It is a difficult task, as there are many possible determinants of marathon performance (not just physiological) and there is little published research about the capabilities of elite marathon runners. Nonetheless, we would like to suggest that one appro...
